Getting to Know God, God is NOT a Creep, Part 1
Have you ever met a person and thought you knew everything about the person? Would you say you know someone’s character, mindset, personality, attitude or even claim to be friends before ever meeting that person? Would you claim to be the person’s child?
The average person would say, “no” to all of the questions above. The average person might even wonder, why ask such dumb questions? Yet a lot of people do exactly that to someone none of us have met in person.
It is a HUGE deal to claim God is your Father. It is such a huge deal that the people who were given the Torah often laugh at those who do. To them it is like walking up to a total stranger and saying, “You are my father.” You can’t do that, there has to be proof.
Recently, I started evaluating what I know about God. I have read the entire Bible twice in the last three years. I also did some independent study of Jewish thought, history and education (yeshivas) and it really opened my eyes about the people as well as their Messiah. Reading the entire Bible gives an overall picture about God’s faithfulness. If you take the Bible at face value (instead of pontificating) it clears up a lot of misconceptions preached as facts but it doesn’t really mean that I know God more because I read the entire Bible. It just means it is harder to tell me garbage about God because I know more about God.
I believe this is why Jesus came when He did (apart from the need to die on a Roman crucifix, to fulfill the words of the prophets and to be the sacrifice to take away the sins of the world). As I studied the philosophies of men I realized they were beginning to miss the entire point. Salvation is a gift, it is not earned and it is not a chore. It is also not suppose to be difficult. God’s love has always been about an honest relationship. The Writings, the Laws and the Prophets or the Old Testament (as Christians call it) were written to reveal the nature of God and His relationship to His people. It was not to elevate one people above another. They were to be a light but mankind always finds itself following the devil. Pride enters our hearts and we suddenly believe something about ourselves that is based in lies. As smart as we can be, we are often fooled by the one who hates us.
I decided to actually spend more time learning about the character, mindset, personality, attitude and ways of God straight from the source. I also decided to study, dissect and analyze His ways more thoroughly. God actually says we should do that for ourselves. Each of us, should do that individually.
My conclusion is God is pretty awesome. I literally am experiencing love in a new way.
First of all, God never changes. I like that. It gives me a sense of joy to know that once I get to know Him as He is, I won’t have to “figure Him out” every year of my life until I meet Him in person. I just have to continue my relationship because God isn’t going to change.
Second, His ways are actually consistent. He gives clear instructions and then He uses that to judge our behavior. There are no hidden tests or gotcha moments in the Bible. God is pretty straight forward. Sometimes a little too straight forward. Have you ever noticed that God hides nothing about the sins of the people in the Bible? What about the way He makes an example of a few people such as Achan, Korah, Miriam, David or Absalom, etc.?
When people get punished in the Bible it is really, really scary. I cannot imagine the earth swallowing a family of people who knew God’s ways and chose to disobey. However, I realize that God has to prove disobedience has consequences.
I can understand why we sin, we are sinful, but what I cannot understand is why we choose to disobey and then think that God’s character is going to change for us. I am a bit concerned for those who reject God because the consequences are scary and easily avoided.
The thing I keep noticing while studying God’s character and His ways is how simple and straight forward He is. The reason why we tend to claim God, without knowing or accepting His ways, is because all of us are a reflection of His laws. We are walking epistles of God’s laws, grace and mercy. We all have the knowledge of God. Everywhere in the world people know of God, none of us are ignorant. All of us need to know God, not know of God.
The problem with pretending to know God is God won’t do the same thing.
God is not a creep looking to beat you up and claim the rights to your soul. That is the devil actually.
God is a perfect gentleman. Jesus goes so far as to say many will say didn’t I do all these things in your name and for your name and yet Jesus will respond, “I never knew you. Get away from me, worker of sin.” I used to worry about that verse of scripture (because no one can argue with Him). Then I realized why He was making the statement. A lot of people actually claim God openly but then openly reject everything about Him. Meaning they don’t know His ways, don’t really want to know His ways or do anything He says, don’t know what a covenant is or don’t want to know His covenants, which includes rights and responsibilities. A lot of people don’t have the Spirit of God and don’t have the character of God. By God’s definition that means you are not His child. If He is in you, you will change and if He isn’t, you won’t. God isn’t complicated.
If you really want to get to know God guess what He wants the same thing. The question is are you willing to really search for Him because if you do, He will make Himself known to you.
A lot people who say they know God don’t really have a real relationship with Him.
One of the things I hate to see is people doing a bunch of stuff that someone else tells them to do (never checking to see if it is what God wants). I love to meet people who do things for God from their heart just to please God. I hate to see people do things for the pastor or for their mom or family but not for God. I also love to hear people doing that all the time, not just in front of other people for recognition. What is the point right? God judges the heart.
The sad part is God loves all of us so much He already did everything for us. He’s already paid the price, committed the ultimate sacrifice and continues to comfort those who know Him. He also plans on giving us love for an eternity without any pain, sickness, death, wars or anything that can hurt us. We will never feel separated from God ever again.
When we reject God, we reject the very nature that we all love on this side of heaven. Most people love the best things life has to offer and all of those things are a reflection of Him (love, joy, peace, good health, etc.)
Yet we reject the person who loves us more than even our closest loved one. Or we say we know Him but we don’t look anything like Him.
I’ve decided that I would rather take the time to make my commitment stronger, more personal and even more transparent because this year God has proved to me just how real and present His love is towards me. A few months ago I wrote that we should date God well, guess what? I did and He blew my mind! He literally, blew my mind and changed my perspective on how He views me, my choices and my actions. I have a lot to change. A lot of my ways aren’t exactly matching His ways but the most important part of growing closer to God is being closer to Him and realizing that someone bigger than even the most famous person in the world loves me and did everything possible to save me from what I deserve.
That continues to blows my mind.
I have only begun to scratch the surface but this is something I know for sure: He will judge us and God’s justice is final. There isn’t a second chance. You have one life, live it with the One who truly loves you and love the people He places in your life.
1 Pe 4:1 Therefore, Christ having suffered for us in the flesh, also you arm yourselves with the same thought, because he having suffered in the flesh has been made to rest from sin, 1Pe 4:2 for him no longer to live in the lusts of men, but to live the remaining time in the flesh in the will of God.
